Jacques Nimki

The Stairwell

31 January - 11 April 2004

To Jacques Nimki, the weeds collected on walks and cycles around London are as fascinating as any orchid to a world-travelling botanist. He is attracted to these plants as ‘unwanted, overlooked, opportunistic and impermanent migrants’. In his large drawings on paper they appear delicately intertwined in complex layers.

In his first large-scale situ work, images of the weeds he found in the Centre’s garden and vicinity are drawn onto the walls of the stairwell. From here they will spread in phases during the exhibition into those more ‘secret’ areas of the Centre least disturbed by traffic.
