Joáo Penalva

19 November 1999 - 23 January 2000

Gallery III is transformed into a cinema, where screenings of Jaoo Penalva’s 336 PEK (336 Rivers), 1998, will take place at 11.15am, 12.30pm, 1.45pm, 3.15pm and 4.30pm daily. This hour-long video with English subtitles, (the original text of the Russian narrative), evokes distant places (mysterious Lake Baikal and its 336 tributaries), childhood memories and folk tales. Memory, the construction of identity and the quest for a truth are constantly questioned in an unravelling narrative.

Exhibition financially supported by Fundacao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento and assisted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and The Porrtuguese Arts Trust
