As part of a programme of events marking the culmination of her Fellowship, Phoebe Cummings presents a symposium drawing together her research interests, focusing on approaches to working with clay across a variety of disciplines from ceramics to science.

Chaired by Clare Twomey.

12.00pm Introduction and welcome

12.15pm Phoebe Cummings in conversation with Clare Twomey.

Cummings in discussion with Twomey about the work and research she has undertaken during the course of the residency and the impact it has had on her work and practice.

12.45pm Dr Javier Cuadros – Natural History Museum

Dr Cuadros, Researcher in clay minerology at the Natural History Museum gives an overview of some his current research projects including his work looking at clay on Mars.

1.15pm James Rigler  - Artist

Artist James Rigler will give a brief overview of his practice, including his background initially studying architecture and how this has influenced his approaches to working with clay and other materials.

1.45pm Professor Christie Brown – University of Westminster

Professor Christie Brown will present the development of the Ceramics Research Centre UK at the University of Westminster and its current 3-year project, focusing on how the idea of art practice as research can and is contributing to the developing dialogues in the field beyond its material specific history.  She will examine the context in which these developments are taking place and the inter-disciplinary relationship that ceramics has with a range of other fields such as sociology, history, archaeology, psychoanalysis and anthropology.
