Family Artist-in-Residence: Hannah Hewetson

Family Artist-in-Residence: Hannah Hewetson

2 July - 17 September 2017

Taking up residence in the Drawing Studio, artist Hannah Hewetson will develop environments and activities for families inspired by our exhibitions Daniel Richter: Lonely Old Slogans and Jennifer Tee: Let It Come Down.

Hannah Hewetson is an artist based in London whose painting practice is about tangible, evident actions that can be seen upon the painted surface. Layered abstract images are built up through series of painted and stenciled marks, which are then broken down and sanded away, to make way for a re-articulation and new response. She takes an intuitive and responsive approach; her process owes much to causality and chance, as one gesture informs the next and each painting leads to its successor. By building the images in this way, each painting becomes a process of navigation, where solutions to problems are sought as they present themselves.

Hannah Hewetson studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford and Glasgow School of Art. She has exhibited in London, Glasgow and Mexico City, and was selected for Creekside Open at APT Gallery and Beep Painting Prize, Swansea. In 2014 she was featured in Thames and Hudson, ‘100 Painters of Tomorrow’. She has previously worked as an artist educator for the workshop programme at Tate.  Read more.
